Answers reflect SAP S/4HANA terminology. Transaction codes, menu paths and cloud features can vary by release and edition, so confirm details in your project system.

Choose an SAP module

Each guide is organised from basic to advanced, followed by scenario-based and practical questions, preparation advice and FAQs.

SAP Interview Questions by Role and Experience

Start with the questions that match the role you are interviewing for. Each link opens the relevant section of a module guide.

Experienced functional consultants

Expect configuration depth, integration and S/4HANA changes. Review the advanced and scenario sections for SAP FICO, SAP SD and SAP MM.

Support (AMS) and migration project roles

Support interviews revolve around tickets and root-cause analysis, and migration interviews around S/4HANA changes. The scenario sections in every guide, plus the common questions below, cover both.

How SAP Interviews Are Usually Structured

The exact process varies by employer, but most SAP hiring follows a similar pattern. Knowing it helps you prepare the right material for each round.

HR or recruiter screening

Confirms your module, experience, notice period, location and expectations. Have a crisp two-minute summary of your SAP background ready.

Technical or functional round

Concept and configuration questions on your module: how a process works, which settings control it and how it integrates with other modules.

Scenario and project round

Real situations: a failed posting, a blocked order, a slow report, an integration design. Interviewers assess how you diagnose, not only what you know.

Client or managerial round

Common in consulting and project roles. Covers communication, handling business users, estimates, priorities and your role in past projects.

Common SAP Interview Questions Across Modules

Questions that come up in almost every SAP interview, whatever the module.

10 questions
Q1

What is the difference between SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA?

All levels

SAP ECC is the previous-generation ERP that runs on several databases. SAP S/4HANA runs only on SAP HANA and uses a simplified data model (for example the Universal Journal ACDOCA in finance and MATDOC for material documents), the Business Partner as the single master for customers and suppliers, and SAP Fiori as the main user experience. SAP's mainstream maintenance for ECC 6.0 ends in 2027, which is driving many conversion projects.

Q2

What are the deployment options for SAP S/4HANA?

All levels

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (multi-tenant SaaS with standardised processes and quarterly or regular updates), SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (single-tenant, typically sold through RISE with SAP, with more flexibility), and on-premise deployment managed by the customer. The option affects extensibility, upgrade cycles and the role of consultants.

Q3

What are greenfield, brownfield and selective data transition?

All levels
  • Greenfield – a new implementation with redesigned processes and data migration.
  • Brownfield – a system conversion of an existing ECC system to S/4HANA, keeping configuration and history.
  • Selective data transition – a mix, moving selected data, processes or company codes into a new landscape.

The choice depends on how much process redesign the business wants and how much history it needs.

Q4

What is SAP Activate?

All levels

SAP Activate is SAP's implementation methodology for S/4HANA and cloud solutions. Its phases are Discover, Prepare, Explore, Realize, Deploy and Run. It uses fit-to-standard workshops in Explore, agile sprints in Realize and SAP Best Practices content as a starting point.

Q5

What is a client in SAP?

All levels

A client is a self-contained business unit within an SAP system with its own master data, transactional data and client-specific configuration, identified by a three-digit number. Repository objects such as programs and tables are client-independent. A typical development system has separate clients for configuration, unit testing and sandbox work.

Q6

What is a transport request and how does the landscape work?

All levels

Changes are recorded in transport requests in development and moved to quality for testing and then to production, usually managed through the Transport Management System (STMS) or tools such as SAP Cloud ALM and ChaRM. Customising requests hold client-specific configuration; workbench requests hold repository objects. Controlled transports keep production stable and auditable.

Q7

What is SAP Fiori?

All levels

SAP Fiori is SAP's design system and user experience for SAP applications, delivered as role-based web apps launched from the SAP Fiori launchpad. App types include transactional, analytical and fact sheet apps, and many are built with Fiori elements on top of CDS views and OData services.

Q8

How do you handle a support ticket in an SAP AMS project?

All levels

Understand and reproduce the issue, classify priority and impact against the agreed SLA, analyse the root cause (configuration, master data, authorisation or code), propose and test the fix in quality, get business approval, transport it to production, document the resolution and close the ticket with the user. Recurring issues should become problem records with permanent fixes.

Q9

What is the clean core approach?

All levels

Clean core means keeping the ERP system as close to standard as possible: using standard processes where they fit, building extensions with released APIs and upgrade-stable techniques (on-stack with ABAP Cloud or side-by-side on SAP BTP), keeping master data clean and integration standardised. It reduces upgrade effort and is central to SAP's S/4HANA and RISE with SAP strategy.

Q10

Explain your last SAP project.

All levels

Structure your answer: client industry and scope, SAP modules and landscape, project type (implementation, rollout, support or conversion), your role and responsibilities, two or three specific things you configured or built, one challenge and how you solved it, and the outcome. Keep it to about two minutes and be ready for follow-up questions on anything you mention.

How to Prepare for an SAP Interview

A focused plan works better than reading hundreds of random questions.

Know your module end to end

Be able to walk through the full process of your area, such as procure-to-pay, order-to-cash or record-to-report, including the main documents and postings.

Learn the key configuration

Know where the important settings live and what they control. Interviewers often ask "where would you configure this?" and "what happens if it is missing?".

Practise scenario questions

Use the scenario sections in each guide. Answer aloud: understand the issue, check the likely causes, explain the fix and how you would prevent it.

Understand integration

Every module connects to others. Explain how your module's transactions affect finance, inventory or other areas.

Review your project experience

Prepare concrete examples of what you configured, built or resolved, with numbers where possible. Interviewers trust specifics.

FAQ

SAP Interview FAQs

How many SAP interview questions should I prepare?

Quality matters more than quantity. Cover the basic, intermediate and scenario sections for your module thoroughly, and prepare several detailed examples from your own projects or training.

Which SAP module is best for freshers?

It depends on your background. Commerce and finance graduates often choose FICO, those with sales or supply chain exposure choose SD or MM, and those with programming skills choose ABAP or BTP. Choose the module that matches your existing knowledge.

Are SAP interviews mostly theoretical or practical?

Experienced interviews are strongly practical and scenario-based. Fresher interviews include more definitions, but even then interviewers check whether you understand how a process works in the system.

How should experienced candidates prepare differently from freshers?

Experienced candidates should focus on configuration depth, integration, S/4HANA changes, troubleshooting and well-structured explanations of their own project work rather than definitions.

Do I need SAP certification to get an interview?

Certification can help, especially for freshers and career switchers, but employers focus mainly on practical knowledge and project experience shown during the interview.

What should I do if I do not know an answer?

Say so honestly, then explain how you would find the answer, for example which configuration, documentation or analysis you would check. Interviewers value a clear approach more than a guess.

SAP Training

Turn interview preparation into practical SAP skills

Reading answers is a good start, but interviewers quickly notice whether you have actually worked in an SAP system. Aplus Edtech's instructor-led programmes let you practise configuration, development and troubleshooting on SAP S/4HANA so that you can explain real steps, not memorised definitions.

Talk to an SAP training advisor

Share your background and target role. An advisor will explain batch timings, curriculum and the right module for you.
